Authorities claim Alec Baldwin’s fake pistol killed photography director in New Mexico

According to the Santa Fe sheriff’s office, Alec Baldwin accidentally shot the director of photography with a “prop weapon” while filming Rust in New Mexico, and he died as a result.

Joel Souza, the film’s director, was also hurt and is being treated at a hospital in Santa Fe. Director of photography Halyna Hutchins, 42, died while being flown to a hospital from the Bonanza Creek Ranch location.

The Associated Press was informed by a Baldwin spokesperson that a prop guy with blanks misfired on the set, and that’s how the tragedy happened. It was claimed that a person close to the inquiry said Baldwin was interrogated late Thursday and spotted crying by New Mexico journalists and photographers.

The scenario being shot seems to have included the firing of a fake weapon according to investigations, a sheriff’s spokesperson said. Police are looking into how and what kind of missile was fired, according to the report. No one has been put on trial yet.

It’s true that gun accidents on set do happen, as the Associated Press reports. Brandon Lee, Bruce Lee’s 28-year-old son, died tragically on the set of The Crow in 1993 after being struck by a.44 caliber bullet during a death scene. A blank round from the cannon was supposed to have been the only thing that would have happened.

Actor Jon-Erik Hexum also died on the set of Cover-Up in 1984. He was playing Russian roulette with a pistol that was meant to be empty, but he was really pretending to be shooting it. Both deaths were deemed accidental after an autopsy was performed on the bodies.
